Description
Burkina Faso, West Africa
A landlocked country in West Africa, Burkina Faso is a large producer of cashews. In 1998, a trading company called Gebana aimed to economically combine social and ecological values, therefore building sustainable food supply chains. Thousands of small farmers were supported by a new cashew processing factory and organized into co-ops, and hundreds of local workers were newly employed in the factory. These endeavours help the farming communities build a better economic future and overall, a more just and sustainable global food systems.
Since 1972, Friends of the Third World/Cooperative Trading, a non-profit membership group, has promoted cooperatives in the local community and countries globally, working for justice in the marketplace. To learn more or to volunteer; call, write, fax, or e-mail for our brochure.
